Copper Red Woodfired Keep Cup

This keep cup is produced in our studio and fired in our custom made wood kiln.
Made from high fire stoneware, woodfired in reduction to cone 11 with copper red glaze.

Reduction firing refers to atmosphere of the kiln starved of oxygen to the point of oxygen molecules being ripped out of the glaze and the clay body.
Elusive copper red depends on successful reduction firing. Copper exposed to oxygen oxidases and changes colour, hence it is crucial to prevent oxygen from interacting with glaze during maturation. A bit of oxygen and the colour is gone.

We use fallen branches and trees from our property to fire and believe that this is the most sustainable way to fire a kiln.

The cup in the photo is not the same but very similar to the one that you are purchasing today. No two cups are exactly same they are unique.
